Lately, companies have been developing AI or adding features to their products that use it, which Gates noted in a blog post.

Some companies that are incorporating AI into their features include Salesforce making ChatGPT available to Slack, Spotify introducing AI DJ, and Snap adding My AI. Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg also recently formed an AI-focused team that he says is dedicated to “creating creative and expressive tools” in the short term and “developing AI characters that can help people in a variety of ways” in the long term.

While Gates praised AI, the Microsoft co-founder also acknowledged the concerns and shortcomings of AI that some have pointed out as “understandable and valid”.

According to the blog post, some of the problems with the AI he noted included that they were sometimes inaccurate, experienced so-called “hallucinations” and couldn’t capture context correctly. Gates said the technical issues can and will be resolved.

Bill Gates smiles thoughtfully

In his blog, Gates called for “rules of the road” to be established so that “any disadvantages of artificial intelligence are far outweighed by its benefits” and “everyone can enjoy” them no matter the circumstances. Governments and charities, he said earlier in his post, will play an important role in this.

The “AI age,” Gates concluded, “is filled with opportunities and responsibilities.”
