
Spotify is adding an artificial intelligence DJ for certain listeners.

The audio streaming service reported on Wednesday. in a press release that users in the US and Canada with premium subscriptions will have access to the DJ for the first time on the same day. According to Spotify, it will be “in beta” and in English initially.

The DJ will provide “a selection of music along with commentary on tracks and artists that we think you’ll love, with a breathtakingly realistic voice,” the company said. This feature will presumably choose from new ringtones in addition to those the user has previously listened to.

According to the press release, it’s designed to improve its music recommendations as it gets more and more feedback from users.

Spotify said the DJ feature is tied to several things, including personalization technology and generative AI “through the use of OpenAI technology.”

The audio streaming service also pointed to a 2022 purchase of Sonantic, an AI voice platform that it says creates “realistic voices from text.”
Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships, Xavier Jernigan, became the first DJ model for his voice, and the company said it will “continue to iterate and innovate.”

AI has made headlines recently, and both Google and Microsoft recently announced new AI-based features for their respective platforms.

Friday Meta Platforms also made public “LLaMA,” a large language model “designed to help researchers advance their work in this area of AI,” produced by Facebook’s parent company.
